SketchBox - September 2018

This month features a trip back to water media, but this time it's preloaded brushes with water-based inks and a few additional goodies.

So this month comes with a selection of "SketchBox Signature" colour brushes which means that the retail price of this excusive is, well, a bit subjective. Nevertheless, there are 4 brushes in the set with black, red, light blue, and purple. There seems to be quite a bit of colour in them and they started flowing pretty readily, with the brush coming to a nice point. A couple of the brushes were pretty stiff, though, and so that led to some lost pigment getting them pliable. Probably should have done a water dip first.

Additional goodies include:

  • Niji Waterbrush, 12mm medium. Good point, fine and thick lines, but it really seems to hold on to the paint, I had a heck of a time cleaning it.
  • Marabu Graphix Aqua Pen - Aqua Green. It has a bullet tip and a brush tip on it.
  • Faber-Castell Pitt Soft Brush - Dark Indigo. This isn't a water-based brush, it's india ink, but you can apply some wet in wet techniques with it.
So, my basic testing sheet:

The colour selections for this box were. in my opinion, a little weird. Notably, missing a yellow to give some more usable mixing options, but there are a few things you can still play with and so I chose to do some galaxy paintings.

As you can see, you can get some really dark blacks going with the brushes. Anyways, despite the strange colour choices, I'm always happy to get watercolour options.
