Pieter Bruegel (~1525 - 1569) was a Dutch painter during the earlier Netherlandish period whose efforts, among others, helped to shape what was to become the golden age of Dutch painting.
Much of his later works, in the last decade of his life, are where his fame in his primary medium comes from. Bruegel focused mainly on scenes with peasants in landscapes, but he also had some notable religious works as well.
